Bella who?

After reading this article I had many questions that weren’t answered about Bella. Obviously the article is a huge complement to Katniss on the hunger games, and we are fully aware why people all around love this charter. But then we have the question that wasn’t fully answered on why Bella is just as loved by young people as Katniss. This article slams Bella and portrays her as such a negative charter, but why was Twilight such a hit? Was it all Edward and Jacob that brought in the high ratings? What made us all want to see what happens next with this “petty” charter Bella?

The question whether Bella or Katniss would win in a battle is a relatively simple and easy to answer question.  We would ass say Katniss and that is exactly what the writer of this article said. Noah Berlatsky started out with a strong sentence claiming Katniss victory over Bella saying “unless Edward or Jacob came to her rescue as they won’t to do, Bella would get stomped.” But then we ask the question why and he goes into further explain how she is much more of a hard ass then Bella is. Katniss is independent and strong willed over Bella who claims her entire life to a boy.

But then we all wonder why people are so in love with the charter Bella portrays. Although Bella is what is said to be “passive, hapless, and an utter mess. Not only is she physically inept, but she has no particular talents or even distinguishing charteristics other than her desperation for romance.” Young people everywhere are in love with the story and more importantly her.

  1. I agree with what you're saying in terms of the obvious favoring of Katniss and the dislike of Bella. Although both sides are represented equally, you can clearly see where the author stands in terms of their preference of Katniss and what Katniss represents versus Bella and what Bella supposably represents. I also don't see how Bella is portrayed as being so bad, whats wrong with a woman having feelings for a man? Why does a woman have to be a super soldier arrow shooting badass? And why is anything other than that is weak? That was the vibe I was getting from the article, and I don't really agree with that point that was made.

  2. I agree with you, Katniss is a totally bad ass from the first book till the last. She does not need Gail or Petta to defended or protect her. She is a strong role model girls can look up too. On the other hand the author completely ragged on Bella. Yes she is somewhat unemotional and very dependent on Edward, but I think she has to be in the novel as a human she cannot defended herself against vampires, with their strength and speed. When Bella does become a vampire she sees how strong she truly is and in the final battle against the bad vampires she protects her entire family and is willing to die for her daughter, like any mother should. In the final battle scene she kicks butt, it is long awaited and I knew she had it in her the entire time. So some of the strengths that the author used were great for Katniss and pretty much got down on his hands and praised her for her totally awesomeness. Then I think his limitations were that he lacked on talking about Bella, he kind of just said she was an emotional whiny girly girl who was obsessed with her man and that was it. So I think it is important to talk about both examples fairly so the reader can get the full information of the argument.

  3. After reading the article ‘Twilight’ vs. ‘Hunger Games’: Why Do So Many Grown-Ups Hate Bella? By Noah Berlatski, I started to question the writer’s opinion about Bella. First of all, has he ever watched Twilight? I’m not a huge Twilight fan, but I’ve seen all the movies. He says,” Bella, on the other hand, is stereotypically girly girl…”. If you’ve watched the movie you would know that she isn’t your typical girl…she barely acts like a girl. She doesn’t wear pink, she doesn’t wear makeup, and at one point she refuses to wear a dress. I am confused where he drew this conclusion that the Bella character is an example of a girly girl. I also agree with you when you say that he doesn’t explain why Twilight is such a loved movie or why people love Bella so much. He explains in the end that, “At the end of Twilight, Bella actually does get power. She turns into a vampire who has the physical and magical wherewithal to save her entire family from death—not to mention flatten Katniss with a flick of her perfect pale sparkly wrist”. He doesn’t really explain that people might love the movie so much because Bella involves into a person that’s able to protect herself juxtaposition the character we started with the beginning.

  4. Having never seen or read twilight I was a bit hasty to agree with the author of "'Twilight' vs. 'Hunger Games': Why Do So Many Grown-Ups Hate Bella?" just as you were. I began to distrust the author because of the lack of physical evidence of Bella being so pathetic. I already knew Katniss was a very powerful and complex character so the embedded quotes were only reaffirming. The question I was asking myself was; if there is such an obvious answer what is the point? This answer was finally revealed near the end of the article; "She turns into a vampire who has the physical and magical wherewithal to save her entire family from death—not to mention flatten Katniss with a flick of her perfect pale sparkly wrist.” The author believes that Bella would lose without her power. Are people really asking who would win in a physical battle between Katniss and Bella, before she becomes a vampire? Clearly Katniss would have a closer match against a vampire. I doubt a vampire could put an end to Katniss’s dreams however I would need to know a lot more about Twilight to make any valid conclusions.
