XXL: of touchy feely.

I have to start this off in contrast to my other bloggers here, I have seen this movie. I saw it when it came out in theaters with my girlfriend and again after reading the article to help me understand better what the three authors have written. With that being said I do feel that Sophie Gilbert had a much better argument with clear support. Yeah, okay she does see the movie as mind numbing and I would have to agree to that, but Sophie and Megan's point about the movie portraying stripping as being fun for men and miserable for women is off. Throughout the movie Mike, Richie and Tarzan are trying to find ways to the make stripping fun and interesting to them again otherwise they feel they need to move on. Heck, even Tarzan says at one point that “he would give it all up for a wife, kids and a home.” I can’t that he is having much fun at this point. Although, Sophie’s view is a little more opinionated she is able to support her ideas better.

In contrast to that, Spencer Kornhaber was not very clear. He gave a lot of metaphoric examples without defining or supporting his ideas and opinions. I found it very difficult to follow his thinking. I also got the feeling that he hated the movie simply because it involved stripping. He mentions that “he’s seen at least one critic…”, without ever citing said critic. Come on guy, if you are going to use someone else’s opinion you have to say whose it was.

So, to sum it up if you are going to write about anything make sure you know what you are writing about, even if you are going to use just your own opinions.

  1. I could totally agree with you, in the article of magic mike I feel like Sophie and Megan have very valid arguments when they try to break down the movie and explain how it’s a nice simple movie that allows us to enjoy along with realize how stripping in this movie was made in a different way that it is usually portrayed in other movies with female strippers. They go along to display that Tatum as a writer/producer was trying to display how men are trying to please women and see women in a different way. Instead of looking at them in a lesser or invaluable way they treat women as if they were goddesses and they lived to please them, showing this off as a motto for the whole Magic Mike club to go by. In my opinion I feel like this was a great way to show the flip the tables view of how men and women are treated in the stripper world. Men will get praise and be treated like glorious hunks while women strippers will be treated like animals, and kind of degraded as animals to beg for the money they are getting from the men they perform for.
