The first essay I read was “Dadbod: A New Word for a
Timeless Physique.” It talked about the new term, Dadbod, which people have
been using. It is used to describe that Homer Simpson like figure, but the person
who wrote it specifies that this is not a new trend that women have just
started liking, they’ve always liked it. He writes, “The rise of dadbod
probably marks not shifting tastes but rather shifting ways of talking about
taste…” I think he’s trying to explain that women have always liked the “dadbod”
it’s just the way people talk about what they like that is bringing it into the
light. If that makes sense. The last sentence in this essay, “A catchy name for
your physique doesn't mean you're special; it means that finally, you’re just
like everyone else” was most similar to a thesis statement.
The second essay is called “The Death of Pretty.” This one
is about how women no longer want to be considered pretty, they want to be hot.
The writer talks about how being pretty is a combination of physical attractiveness
and a sense of innocence. It talks about how they believe when men sense a
women is innocent, he feels the need to protect and guard it. When a women is
hot it makes men see the women as more of an object. I felt like this article
was very true especially for me, being a boy and all. This sentence stuck out
to me as the thesis, “Nobody wants to be thought of as innocent, the good
girl. They want to be hot, not pretty.”
I think the main ideas are related in terms of discussing
what women are most attracted to, in the dadbod, and what men are most
attracted to, in the “pretty”.
I have to disagree. I don't believe the articles were trying to say what men and women are attracted to, but rather what men and women "should" be attracted to. Again society and the media defining the masses and shutting out individuality.

ReplyDeleteI agree with what you're saying about the second article and how it seems women want to be sexy and not pretty. With the rise in popularity of stores like "Victoria's Secret" and the twerking big booty atmosphere in pop culture today, it seems obvious that the cute girl type is being out matched by the hot girl type. The fact that most guys go for the hot girl first isn't helping either, the cute girls see that and then sometimes they try to become the hot girl.
